CBD and CBG: The Cannabinoids of Hemp

Is There a Difference Between CBD and CBG?

Cannabis is comprised of several compounds which contribute its chemical makeup. Of them, the cannabinoids, cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG) perform a similar mechanism in the body as they bind to the same receptor, but they can provide different results. CBD is the major cannabinoid and CBG is the minor, meaning cannabis has higher levels of CBD than CBG. Neither of these constituents are euphoric, which contributes to their legality. As of the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp-derived products with less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are considered legal on a federal scale.

Therapeutic Benefits of CBD and CBG

CBD is commonly known for its anti-inflammatory properties; some of these effects are also present in CBG. CBD has been shown to help with symptoms and severity of anxiety while CBG has been used as a treatment for multiple sclerosis. Due to the anxiolytic, or anxiety limiting, properties CBD is suggested to be a key agent for people to quit smoking as it will limit the withdrawal symptoms. A CBD study done in 2018 proved that CBD reversed attentional biases to cigarette cues in smokers when compared to a placebo. 2018 was a groundbreaking year in the world of hemp as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved CBD oil for the treatment of seizures as well as two kinds of epilepsy: Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in patients two years of age and older. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D said “This approval serves as a reminder that advancing sound development programs that properly evaluate active ingredients contained in marijuana can lead to important medical therapies. And the FDA is committed to this kind of careful scientific research and drug development.” These advancements in medical technology have been able to change the lives of many as the stigma behind hemp-derived substances dwindles away.

Patients with Alzheimer’s disease and/or dementia are another example of candidates for CBD for treatment. The components of CBD may suppress major symptoms such as memory loss and behavioral disfunction. CBG, while less researched than CBD, has many therapeutic benefits as well and will continue to be used in treatment for various diseases. Evidence from a 2020 review study suggests that CBG is an effective therapeutic for neurological disorders such as Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. The anti-inflammatory properties of CBG make it a productive treatment for irritable bowel disease rather than the standard drugs such as amino salicylates, corticosteroids, thiopurines, methotrexate, and anti-tumor necrosis factor agents. While these drugs have historically been effective in treatment, they do not come without side-effects of long-term use which ultimately impact the patient’s quality of life.

Can You Use CBD and CBG Together?

The answer is yes! CBD and CBG are the two cannabinoids present in Cannabis sativa and they interact with the same cannabinoid receptors in the human body. They work well alone, but with a properly assigned treatment plan they can be more powerful when taken in unison. The two cannabinoids have complimentary properties and can enhance the effects of one another.
